The Last Toymaker

Documentary

THE BRIEF

The Last Toymaker follows master craftsman Rob-Roy as he prepares to close the doors of his beloved wooden toy shop after more than three decades.

In a world increasingly dominated by technology, Rob-Roy remains devoted to the quiet artistry of traditional toy-making, shaping each piece by hand, guided not by screens or algorithms, but by skill, intuition and a lifetime of dedication to his craft.

What began as an intimate portrait of a veteran toymaker evolved into a broader reflection on the digital age: the diminishing role of tactile play, the erosion of children’s imaginative freedom, and the growing distance within modern family relationships.

As Rob-Roy’s story unfolds, the film explores the tension between nostalgia and progress, questioning what is lost when handmade objects, and the human connections they nurture, fade from everyday life. Through his workshop and wisdom, The Last Toymaker becomes a meditation on creativity, patience, and the enduring value of slowing down in a fast-moving world.

THE VISUALS

Inspired by the artistry of Rob-Roy’s work, my aim was to echo his craftsmanship through the cinematography itself. His poise, focus and meticulous attention to detail became guiding principles in shaping the visual language of the film.

During pre-production, I developed a visual reference board that drew from many of the characteristics present in his craft. This led to a textured, grounded aesthetic built around strong contrast ratios and earthy tones that reflected the raw materials of the workshop. At the same time, I preserved a sense of colour vibrancy to lift the image from the naturally darker environment, ensuring the visuals retained energy and clarity.

This balance allowed the film to feel tactile and atmospheric without becoming visually heavy. The workshop environment itself became an important storytelling element, with light, shadow and texture working together to highlight the process behind the craft.

I also incorporated moments of slow motion to give key actions space to breathe, allowing the viewer to fully appreciate the precision and mastery within Rob-Roy’s work.
