Zara’s Story

Music Masters - Branded Documentary

THE BRIEF

For Zara, playing the violin is far more than a hobby — it provides an outlet for creativity, a space for personal expression, and an opportunity to grow through music. Her journey forms the heart of this film for Music Masters, a UK charity dedicated to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to fulfil their creative potential, regardless of background or circumstance.

The story follows Zara as she develops her relationship with the instrument, offering audiences a window into both her dedication and the supportive role played by her family. Through this personal narrative, the film also highlights the wider impact of Music Masters’ work, demonstrating how access to music education can transform confidence, creativity and opportunity.

From a production perspective, the challenge was balancing a deeply personal documentary story with the clarity and structure required of a campaign film. The brief called for a narrative that felt emotionally grounded while still maintaining a cinematic quality that would engage a wider audience.

To achieve this, the film leans into an observational style, allowing moments to unfold naturally while using fluid camera movement to respond to the environment. This approach helped retain the authenticity of documentary storytelling while adding a subtle commercial polish to the visuals.

THE VISUALS

Branded documentary sits at the intersection of documentary authenticity and commercial polish, and I believe the cinematography should reflect that balance. The environments we were working in brought an inherent unpredictability to the imagery, introducing a natural rawness, while the visual treatment needed to retain the precision and refinement expected of commercial work.

My aim was to find a visual language that bridged these two qualities. I developed a vibrant palette that preserved depth and richness in the shadows, allowing the image to feel both alive and grounded. Part of this approach was inspired by the violin itself — an instrument defined by dark, resonant wood tones and a quiet elegance in both form and sound. Translating that character into the cinematography helped unify the film’s aesthetic with its subject.

For the lens package, I selected Zeiss CP.2 primes. Their clean optical rendering and reliability made them ideal for a fast-moving shoot, allowing us to transition quickly between setups while maintaining a consistent and controlled image.
