We’ll Go Down in History
British Film Institute (BFI) - Documentary
THE BRIEF
We’ll Go Down in History follows TRUK United, a pioneering grassroots football club proudly built by and for the trans community. The film documents the team’s triumphs and challenges, both on and off the pitch, as they cultivate a vital haven of inclusivity and solidarity amid rising transphobia.
In a climate where LGBTQIA+ rights face sustained pressure, this film underscores a simple but essential truth: everyone deserves the right to play the sport they love.
Developed with support from the BFI Doc Society’s Made of Truth fund, dedicated to bold, original non-fiction storytelling that responds to the world as it is changing, this film embodies the spirit and purpose of the programme.
We were pleased to collaborate with Trans On Screen to engage talented LGBTQIA+ creatives across all stages of production. The film was also selected for the British Council’s Five Films for Freedom campaign, screening in more than 10 countries and reaching an audience of over 2.2 million.
THE VISUALS
Early conversations with the directors established that the film would adopt a true fly-on-the-wall approach, closely tracking contributors as they moved through their daily lives. From the outset, this meant embracing natural light and practical environments as the primary shaping forces of the image. While inherently challenging, surrendering a degree of control in favour of authenticity allowed the story to lead the cinematography.
My objective was to create a visual palette that felt unobtrusive yet energised — never competing with the narrative, but subtly enhancing it. I leaned into the vibrancy of the environments: the saturated greens of football pitches, the bold colour of kits, and the shifting tonal qualities of changing rooms and interiors. In more introspective moments, the look naturally softened and darkened, allowing the emotional beats to dictate contrast and texture.
Given the fast-paced nature of the shoot and the reliance on a shoulder-mounted setup, I selected Angénieux EZ zoom lenses. Their clean optical character and versatile focal range allowed me to respond instinctively to unfolding action while maintaining visual consistency and precision.
